Cardiff City Commentator Rob Phillips Credits Nathan Blake with Saving His Life After Suspected Heart Attack at Bolton Match

Veteran football commentator Rob Phillips has publicly thanked former Cardiff City and Wales defender Nathan Blake for intervening when he suffered a suspected heart attack shortly after covering a match earlier this month.

Phillips had just finished his commentary duties at Bolton Wanderers' Toughsheet Community Stadium, where Cardiff City had fallen to a last-gasp defeat in a Championship fixture, when he began experiencing intense chest pains while preparing to leave the press box.

The broadcaster, who had intended to make the long drive back to south Wales from Greater Manchester, was persuaded to remain at the ground by Blake, his long-time co-commentator, who noticed something seriously wrong with his colleague's appearance.

According to Phillips, Blake immediately recognised that he had lost all colour in his face and insisted he was not going anywhere until he received medical attention.

The pair, who have worked together since Blake retired from his playing career, were going through their usual post-match routine when the situation rapidly escalated.

Speaking to BBC Radio Wales, Phillips recounted that Cardiff had performed well in the match despite conceding a 90th-minute header from Thierry Gale, and that he had completed his post-match interviews before the chest pains struck as he returned to the press box.

Phillips said he attempted to reassure Blake by telling him he would be fine, but his colleague was unconvinced, pointing out that he had turned alarmingly pale.

Even as he was being taken to see the Bolton club doctor, Phillips recalled that he was still laughing and joking, unaware of the severity of his condition.

The club doctor, David Humphreys, delivered the news with a calm but blunt assessment, telling Phillips that while he could not be entirely certain, he believed the commentator was in the middle of a heart attack.

Within an hour of that consultation, Phillips found himself on an operating table with a catheter inserted into his arm as medical staff worked to clear a blocked artery.

Reflecting on the speed of the response, Phillips said he was grateful to have been surrounded by medical professionals when the emergency unfolded, noting that football clubs are well equipped to handle such crises because they have trained personnel on hand.

Blake, who made 131 appearances for Cardiff City and earned 29 caps for Wales during a career that also included spells at Sheffield United, Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers, attributed his quick thinking to lessons learned from his mother.

The 54-year-old explained that his mother, who worked as a nurse, had always impressed upon him the importance of calling an ambulance if someone lost their colour in the way Phillips had.

He described his actions simply as what friends do for one another, brushing aside the praise during an appearance on the Rob and Blakey's Commentary Box podcast, where the pair discussed the incident.

Phillips responded by thanking Blake warmly, referring to him as his "brother" and stating plainly that without his intervention, he might not have survived the ordeal.

The commentator also expressed deep appreciation for the care he received, praising Dr Humphreys and the wider Bolton medical team, saying he could not thank them enough for their professionalism and swift action.

Phillips had been planning to attend Wales' Nations League fixture against Portugal alongside his partner, a match that would have marked his first time watching the national team as a supporter in more than four decades.

Instead, he was forced to watch from his sofa at home as Wales slipped to defeat in Lisbon, a disappointing result that paled in comparison to the personal health battle he was facing.

He acknowledged how fortunate he felt to have been so well looked after throughout the incident, and paid tribute to his family for their support during a frightening period.

Phillips singled out his partner, Elin, describing her as magnificent, and said his wider family had also been outstanding in helping him through the aftermath of the health scare.

The incident has drawn attention to the warning signs of heart attacks, with the NHS advising anyone experiencing symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath or a sensation resembling indigestion to call 999 immediately.

Medical guidance also highlights the importance of watching for pale, blue or grey skin, which can be easier to detect on the palms of a person's hands, as was the case with Phillips.

Phillips' story serves as a reminder of how quickly a cardiac emergency can unfold, even in seemingly routine circumstances, and how the presence of trained individuals and informed bystanders can make a critical difference.

For Phillips, the episode has reinforced the value of friendship and quick action, and he now looks ahead to recovery with gratitude for those who stepped in when it mattered most.
