Chilling Bodycam Footage Reveals Dexter-Obsessed Student's Web of Lies After Brutal 'Kill Room' Murder

Police have released dramatic body-worn camera footage showing the moment a university forensics student was detained for the sadistic murder of a woman inside a makeshift "kill room" inspired by the hit American television series Dexter. The recordings capture Benjamin Day attempting to deceive officers with an elaborate false narrative, moments after he had stabbed his victim 78 times in a premeditated attack that has shocked even seasoned investigators.

The video, made public by West Midlands Police on Wednesday, shows the 20-year-old near the junction of Highview Street and Brewery Street in Dudley, visibly bleeding from a severe wound to his hand. Day had sustained the injury while trying to dismember the body of 24-year-old Maria Saceanu, a Romanian national who had been lured to a plastic-lined room at an Airbnb property in Tividale, in the West Midlands. Rather than confessing to the horrific crime, Day told officers he had been attacked by a wild animal, suggesting it "might have been a fox."

The court heard how Day, a student at the University of Worcester, had meticulously planned the brutal assault. Prosecutor's statements indicated that he left the Airbnb at approximately 12:30 GMT on 21 December, walking some distance before calling emergency services at 12:50 to request medical assistance. During this call, he was still concealing the true nature of his injuries and the atrocities he had just committed. The released footage shows him conversing with police while bleeding, maintaining his fabricated story about the animal attack with remarkable composure.

In a further clip provided by West Midlands Police, Day is seen lying on a bed at Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley, where he was formally arrested at 03:42. He is wearing a khaki top strikingly similar to the attire worn by the protagonist in Dexter, the television series about a forensic expert who moonlights as a vigilante serial killer. In a moment of dark irony, he is heard remarking to medical staff: "I have got four fingers thankfully." This comment came after he had nearly severed his hand while attempting to dismember his victim's body.

During his interactions with police, Day also falsely claimed he could not remember where he had parked his car, which was later found outside the property containing his victim's remains. He told officers he had driven to the Dudley area to look for a "random girl" in a bar, a flimsy cover story that quickly unraveled under police scrutiny. The investigation revealed that Day had been a forensics student at the University of Worcester, a fact that adds a disturbing layer to the premeditated nature of his crime, as his academic background would have provided him with knowledge relevant to evidence handling.

The victim, Maria Saceanu, had been working as a sex worker before she was lured to the Airbnb property. What she believed would be a routine engagement turned into a nightmare of unimaginable proportions. The court heard how she suffered 78 knife wounds in an attack that Detective Inspector Matt Marston, who led the investigation for West Midlands Police's Major Crime Team, described as having shocked even experienced officers. The "kill room" itself had been carefully constructed with plastic sheeting lining the walls and floor, a detail clearly inspired by the fictional character Dexter Morgan's method of containing forensic evidence at his crime scenes.

Det Insp Marston, speaking after the case, explained that Day had an obsessive personality and had developed a dangerous fixation on the character Dexter. "He planned this murder in meticulous detail," Marston stated. "It was a pre-planned brutal attack on a defenceless woman lured to the room he had rented." The detective's comments underscore the calculated nature of the crime, which involved renting the property specifically for the purpose of committing murder, luring the victim under false pretenses, and preparing the space to contain forensic evidence.

The sequence of events following the murder demonstrates Day's attempts to evade detection. After inflicting the fatal wounds, he turned the knife on himself, cutting open his hand during a botched attempt to dismember the body. Realizing the severity of his injury, he left the Airbnb and walked some distance before calling 999. When officers arrived, they quickly became suspicious of his account. "Day had flagged down officers where he offered them a fabricated story about the reason why he had received an injury to his hand," Marston recounted. "Officers were suspicious and he was quickly detained."

Day, who resides at Yeadon Close in Redditch, Worcestershire, initially faced charges related to the murder but changed his plea at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Tuesday, admitting to murdering the 24-year-old Romanian woman. He has been remanded in custody and now faces a mandatory life sentence when he appears for sentencing on 4 December. The change of plea came after overwhelming evidence had been compiled by investigators, including the body-worn camera footage, forensic evidence from the Airbnb, and his own contradictory statements.

The case has sent shockwaves through the local community and beyond, raising questions about the influence of violent media on vulnerable individuals. Day's obsession with a fictional serial killer, combined with his forensic training, created what investigators describe as a lethal combination. His decision to wear Dexter-style clothing even after the murder suggests a deeply troubling psychological identification with the character. Most worryingly, the meticulous planning that went into constructing the kill room indicates that this was not a spontaneous act of violence but the culmination of a twisted fantasy.

West Midlands Police have expressed their continued support for Maria's family, with Marston stating: "The details of this case shocked experienced officers and our thoughts continue to go out to the heartbroken family of Maria at this time." The release of the footage serves multiple purposes: demonstrating the thoroughness of the investigation to the public, potentially encouraging other victims to come forward, and highlighting the crucial role that body-worn cameras play in capturing initial interactions between suspects and police.

The implications of this case extend beyond the immediate tragedy. It raises important discussions about the potential dangers of parasocial relationships with fictional characters, particularly when combined with violent tendencies and specialized knowledge. It also highlights vulnerabilities faced by sex workers, who are statistically at higher risk of violent victimization. As sentencing approaches, the focus will shift to ensuring that justice is served for Maria Saceanu and that lessons are learned from this horrifying sequence of events, which began with a rented Airbnb room and ended with a young woman's life brutally taken.
