Demands for Answers Intensify in Mississippi After Black Woman Found Hanging from Tree

More than a month after 29-year-old Tasia Fortune was discovered hanging from a tree in Jackson, Mississippi, her grieving family and local community members are urgently demanding transparency from authorities as frustrations over the pace of the investigation continue to mount.

Fortune’s body was initially discovered by authorities on August 3 in the lot of an abandoned property. In the weeks that followed, local residents in the majority-Black city grew increasingly unsettled by a lack of substantive public information regarding the circumstances surrounding her sudden and tragic death.

Following an extended period of silence, Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney publicly addressed the incident during a municipal meeting, confirming that law enforcement had been treating Fortune’s case as a potential homicide from the onset of the inquiry. Prior to this public statement, local authorities had publicly characterized the situation strictly as a general death investigation.

Chief Brackney explained that the department routinely approaches unresolved death inquiries as potential homicides to safeguard and preserve vital forensic evidence while waiting for formal autopsy findings. Brackney noted that investigators are operating at the highest appropriate level as they await formal determinations regarding the official cause and manner of death.

Meanwhile, the state medical examiner’s office has declined to provide comment on the active proceeding. The absence of preliminary findings has left Fortune’s relatives searching for clarity regarding what transpired on the day she died.

Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, who resides in Kentucky, expressed profound exasperation with law enforcement’s communication. Spivey recounted making repeated, unsuccessful inquiries to investigators, only to learn about significant updates through a televised public city meeting rather than direct communication from detectives.

Spivey had last seen her daughter alive on July 26, when Fortune traveled from Mississippi—where she had lived for roughly ten years—to attend a family reunion in Kentucky. During that visit, Fortune spoke openly about the possibility of relocating back home to be closer to her family.

The emotional burden on the family culminated when Spivey had to view her daughter's body at a funeral home prior to the burial service. The experience proved deeply distressing, leaving relatives traumatized as they attempted to process the sudden loss while contending with unresolved questions.

The circumstances of Fortune's death have resonated deeply across Jackson, reawakening painful historical memories in a state with a documented legacy of lynchings and racial terror. For many residents, the lack of immediate answers has heightened anxiety and fueled suspicions that racial violence could be resurfacing.

Public concern is further amplified by the fact that Fortune’s death represents the third reported instance of an individual being discovered hanging from a tree in Mississippi in less than twelve months. In September 2025, the bodies of two men—one Black and one white—were found on the very same day in separate incidents.

Both of the 2025 cases were officially classified by authorities as suicides. However, the ruling in at least one of those deaths has faced public dispute, with the mother of Trey Reed, one of the deceased men, openly rejecting the official conclusion regarding her son.

In response to these developments, community members have mobilized both locally and online to demand outside accountability. An internet petition calling for an independent inquiry into State Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Staci Turner, specifically regarding the handling of death cases involving people of color, has gathered more than 50,000 signatures. A separate petition urges federal law enforcement to take over the investigation into Fortune's death.

Elected officials have also begun voicing dissatisfaction with the municipal response. Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes voiced concern over the apparent lack of police visibility, stating that he had visited Fortune’s suspected residence on multiple occasions without observing any visible detective activity.

Councilman Stokes argued that given the historical weight of a hanging in Mississippi, the case warrants the highest investigative priority. Stokes revealed that he had dispatched formal correspondence to both the regional FBI office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office weeks earlier requesting federal support, but had received no reply from either entity.

Federal lawmakers are similarly pushing for broader oversight. U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett submitted a formal letter to the U.S. Department of Justice requesting an inquiry into recent deaths in Mississippi, reflecting a growing push for federal authorities to intervene as a mourning family continues its search for the truth.
