Family Accuses South Carolina Pastor of Coercive Control in Tragic Death of Wife Mica Miller

The life and untimely death of Mica Miller, a former worship leader, have sparked a heated debate following allegations by her siblings that her estranged husband, South Carolina pastor John-Paul "JP" Miller, coerced her final hospitalization before her death in 2024. The family's claims are detailed in a three-part true-crime series, "Death of the Pastor's Wife," which premiered on Netflix on August 29, 2026.

Mica Miller's siblings have come forward to share their account of the troubled marriage, asserting that JP Miller involuntarily admitted his wife to a mental health center. They describe this incident as part of a broader pattern of coercive control during their marriage. Mica's death, which occurred on April 27, 2024, was ruled a suicide by the North Carolina Medical Examiner's Office.

The siblings claim that Mica was diagnosed with bipolar disorder while engaged to Miller, who reportedly took an active role in overseeing her care. They state that Mica was hospitalized multiple times during the relationship, including shortly before the couple's marriage in 2017. In a handwritten affidavit accompanying her divorce filing, Mica alleged that she had been subjected to abuse "emotionally, sexually, spiritually, financially, and physically."

The documentary series, "Death of the Pastor's Wife," features never-before-seen footage and firsthand accounts from friends and family. It relies on interviews with Mica's relatives, friends, former Solid Rock Church members, and her divorce attorney. The series also reveals that while Mica was hospitalized, Miller took possession of her vehicle, phone, and laptop, which contained intimate photographs of her. Mica later reported the alleged incident to police.

Miller has reportedly declined to participate in the documentary. Fox News Digital has reached out to his attorneys for comment. The Robeson County Sheriff's Office concluded that Mica died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and closed its investigation. Miller has denied involvement in her death and has not been charged in her death.

However, Miller is currently facing an unrelated federal prosecution over his alleged conduct toward Mica before her death. A federal grand jury indicted Miller in December 2025 on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to investigators, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of South Carolina.

The documentary series has sparked a conversation about the complexities of domestic abuse within religious communities. It highlights the challenges faced by victims who seek to leave abusive relationships and the potential consequences of speaking out against powerful figures within their faith.

Mica Miller, 30, was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina two days after serving Miller with divorce papers. The case has drawn national attention, and the family's allegations have prompted further scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding Mica's death.

As the story unfolds, the public will be left to grapple with the complexities of Mica's life, her relationship with her husband, and the impact of her untimely death on her loved ones and the community at large. The documentary series serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic abuse and the importance of supporting victims in their quest for safety and justice.
