A family in the United States is grappling with the harrowing possibility that their loved one, an American traveler, may have been caught in the devastating floods that have ravaged the border region between Nepal and China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Sunny Patel, the son of Jitendra Patel, had a chilling realization while watching viral footage of the flooding, which has killed hundreds and left thousands missing.
Sunny Patel was deeply affected by the footage of the torrential flood, which he saw on a viral video. It was only a few moments later that he connected the devastating scene to his father's recent travels. "I watched the video and I just thought of how horrific it was. And then... probably 30 seconds later, it registered," he recounted.
Jitendra Patel was last heard from on a Wednesday morning, when he was believed to have crossed the border from Nepal into China. However, Sunny has been unable to confirm the details of his father's crossing. The lack of information coming out of China has been particularly frustrating for the family. They have reached out to embassies in Kathmandu and Beijing, as well as the U.S. State Department, to no avail.
The flood, which has left a trail of destruction in its wake, is believed to have been caused by a large chunk of ice breaking off a glacier and falling into the Lhende Khola River. The resulting wave of rock, ice, and debris hurtled through the mountain river systems, leading to widespread devastation. More than 600 people have been confirmed dead, with over 3,000 still missing and over 4,000 rescued.
Sunny Patel's father, Jitendra, was part of a group heading up to Mount Kailash, a sacred site for many, when the tragedy struck. The group was delayed due to car troubles, which Sunny believes could have been the difference between life and death. "They were actually supposed to be there the day prior and unfortunately had some car troubles from what we can make out... which, you know, of course, could be all the difference," Sunny said.
Jitendra Patel was known for his optimistic outlook and belief in the goodness of people. "He always, always, always said, 'God is good...' If you called him and said, 'How you doing?' He would say, 'I'm the best, God is great.' And he was just the most upbeat, positive person I've ever met," Sunny remembered.
As the family searches for answers, they are also trying to raise awareness about the lack of information coming out of the Chinese side of the border. They have filed missing person reports with every agency they can think of, and some have been responsive. However, the absence of information from China remains a significant concern.
The devastating floods have highlighted the challenges faced by families and governments in the wake of such natural disasters. The international community has been mobilizing to provide aid to the affected regions, but the search for missing persons continues to be a top priority for many families like the Patels. As the search goes on, the hope for answers and closure remains a beacon of light in the midst of the tragedy.
