Guardiola Pledges Unwavering Support as Manchester City Confront Guilty Verdict on Financial Charges

Pep Guardiola has publicly declared his continued allegiance to Manchester City and its leadership after an independent commission found the club guilty of all charges relating to breaches of the Premier League's financial regulations. The former manager, who spent a decade in charge at the Etihad Stadium, issued a message of solidarity to supporters worldwide, insisting he remains firmly behind the club despite the damning verdict.

The commission determined that City had orchestrated what it described as "sham contracts" with several commercial partners, forming part of a wider scheme designed to conceal secret funding exceeding £830m. The Premier League confirmed that the club was found guilty of all charges connected to financial rule breaches spanning the 2009-10 to 2017-18 seasons. In addition, City were found guilty of all but one charge relating to a failure to cooperate with the investigation.

City have consistently denied any wrongdoing throughout the process. The club now has until 2 October to lodge an appeal against the commission's findings, setting the stage for what could be a prolonged legal battle over the outcome.

Guardiola, who took charge at City in July 2016 and departed last summer, used social media to express his unwavering commitment. He wrote that he wanted every City fan around the globe to know he was present "more than ever," adding that he always has been and always will be behind his club, its owner, chairman Ferran Soriano, the players, the staff, current manager Enzo Maresca, and the supporters. He concluded his message by stating that they would get through the situation together and declaring his love for the fanbase.

The Catalan coach enjoyed extraordinary success during his time at the helm, guiding City to six Premier League titles, including a record-breaking four consecutive crowns from 2020-21. His trophy haul also included the Champions League, three FA Cups, and five League Cups, cementing his status as one of the most decorated managers in the club's history.

This is not the first occasion on which Guardiola has voiced his support for City amid the financial allegations. In November 2024, before his eventual departure, he spoke publicly about the charges and insisted he "will be here" even in the hypothetical scenario of the club being relegated as a consequence. That earlier statement now carries additional weight given the severity of the commission's findings.

Club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak issued a statement on Saturday expressing continued confidence that the club can prove its innocence. His remarks signalled a defiant stance from the ownership, who have consistently maintained that the charges are unfounded and that the club has been treated unfairly.

Further reinforcing the club's position, chief executive Ferran Soriano addressed staff and players in a video message on Tuesday, a recording of which was subsequently leaked. In the message, Soriano claimed that "irrefutable evidence" had been "ignored" by the commission, suggesting the club believes the adjudication process failed to take account of material that would have supported their case.

Manchester City, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi United Group, responded to the verdict by stating they were "both disappointed and surprised." The reaction from the club's hierarchy reflects a deep sense of grievance and sets the tone for what is likely to be a robust appeal process in the coming weeks.

The human impact of the verdict has also been felt acutely by those with long-standing ties to the club. Former City defender Micah Richards described feeling "absolutely devastated" after reading the Premier League's findings, which he characterised as "damning." Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Richards said he found the reports troubling, particularly the use of the term "sham contracts," and expressed his profound emotional reaction to the news.

Richards, who joined City's youth academy at the age of 14, spoke passionately about his connection to the club, stating that he would "die for that club" and that he had achieved his dream there. He emphasised that his concern extended beyond himself as a former player, highlighting the distress that supporters must be experiencing as they grapple with the uncertainty surrounding their club's future.

The 38-year-old shared a particularly poignant detail about his time in lodgings as a young academy player, when he lived with a local family who were longstanding City supporters. He revealed that his former landlord, a man who has backed the club for more than six decades, called him in tears seeking information. Richards admitted he had no answers to provide, describing the uncertainty as heartbreaking.

Richards also acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting that while the Premier League's reports appear damning, there remains City's side of the story to be considered. He admitted to feeling a mixture of sadness, anger, and confusion, reflecting the turbulent emotions experienced by many associated with the club as they await further developments.

The verdict represents one of the most significant rulings in the history of the Premier League, with potential ramifications extending far beyond Manchester City. Questions surrounding financial regulation, club ownership, and the integrity of commercial arrangements are likely to dominate discussion across English football in the weeks and months ahead.

For now, the focus turns to whether City will exercise their right to appeal before the 2 October deadline. Should they proceed, the case could continue to cast a shadow over the club's operations and reputation, while Guardiola's public backing ensures that the emotional connection between the club's most successful manager and its supporters remains intact during the most challenging period in its recent history.
