Israeli Leadership Strongly Denounces Award-Winning Gaza War Documentary 'NAZA'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued a fierce condemnation of a newly acclaimed documentary examining the military campaign in Gaza, characterizing the investigative film as a shocking component of broader international incitement directed against the Jewish people.

The documentary, titled "NAZA," was co-directed by Israeli journalists Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor. The work presents serious allegations regarding Israeli military operations, asserting that the expectation of substantial civilian casualties was methodically incorporated into operational targeting protocols during the ongoing war in the Palestinian territory.

The political backlash in Israel follows significant artistic recognition for the production on the global stage. Over the weekend, the project was awarded the prestigious Special Jury Prize at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, having previously drawn an enthusiastic reception that included a 25-minute standing ovation from attendees following its initial festival screening.

The film derives its distinct title directly from an official Israeli military operational term utilized to denote projected collateral casualties. To construct its narrative and substantiate its claims, the investigative project incorporates a series of confidential, anonymous interviews conducted with active and former Israeli soldiers as well as intelligence officers who participated directly in the military campaign.

Addressing the controversy through a video statement shared on his official Telegram channel, Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed profound indignation that such severe criticism had originated from Israeli citizens themselves. He framed the documentary as an intolerable internal betrayal occurring at a moment when the nation is actively combating a surge in worldwide hostility.

Netanyahu emphasized that the state is engaged in a continuous confrontation against international antisemitic incitement, making it intolerable when domestic voices mirror those sentiments. The prime minister specifically voiced his outrage that two Israeli filmmakers would present the Israel Defense Forces to international audiences as war criminals and subsequently receive public acclaim and festival applause for doing so.

Echoing the prime minister's vehement objections, Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir issued a strongly worded rebuke of the production. Zamir formally characterized the documentary not merely as standard public scrutiny, but as an explicit and damaging attack launched directly against the State of Israel.

According to Zamir, based on the information made public regarding the project, the documentary does not represent a legitimate attempt at institutional critique or an honest endeavor to uncover wartime facts. Instead, the military chief declared that the film relies upon modern blood libels, calculated distortions of operational reality, and grave, unfounded accusations aimed at degrading the reputation of IDF commanders and soldiers.

In response to the documentary's release and international recognition, the top military leadership has initiated steps toward potential legal intervention. Zamir instructed the Military Advocate General, whose jurisdictional authorities are formally confined to internal military matters, to closely review the production and pursue any viable legal avenues regarding the documentary and the individuals responsible for creating it.

While the two filmmakers could not be immediately reached for further comment following the high-level political and military denunciations, director Yuval Abraham addressed the core motivations behind the project during his formal acceptance speech at the Venice awards ceremony.

Abraham asserted on stage that refusing to acknowledge state-sanctioned violence serves only to allow such actions to endure over time. He stressed that it was of paramount importance for Israeli society in particular to confront the realities depicted on screen, explicitly telling the international audience that the country itself bears direct responsibility for committing these wartime crimes.

The intense debate surrounding the documentary unfolds against the backdrop of an unprecedented human toll and widespread physical destruction across the Gaza Strip. According to official figures released by Gaza health authorities, more than 73,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom were civilians, have been killed since the commencement of Israel's sustained military campaign, which has reduced large swathes of the enclave to rubble.

The current conflict began following the cross-border assault led by Hamas militants on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals inside Israel, most of them non-combatants.

In defense of its ongoing operations, the Israeli government and military leadership maintain that extensive precautions have been implemented throughout the campaign to minimize civilian harm. Israeli officials argue that military forces are compelled to battle an adversary whose fighters intentionally position themselves within heavily populated civilian infrastructure, including medical facilities, educational centers, and emergency shelters.

Hamas has consistently rejected these allegations, denying that its armed forces utilize Gaza's civilian population as human shields. As international scrutiny over targeting procedures continues, the emergence of "NAZA" and the subsequent official pushback highlight a deep, intensifying domestic and global rift over the conduct and human cost of the war.
