Michigan Senate Candidate Abdul El-Sayed Faces Intense Backlash Over 9/11 Message and Ties to Hasan Piker

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has become the center of a sharp political controversy after posting a commemorative message on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The tribute, which was shared on his official social media account, quickly triggered strong pushback from conservative digital commentators and Republican officials. Critics seized on the post to challenge the progressive candidate’s background, previous statements, and public association with controversial left-wing figures.

In his social media post on X, El-Sayed described the 2001 attacks as an assault not only on the physical nation but on its foundational principles. He wrote that the terrorists targeted the very idea of America as a country bound together by shared ideals of justice and freedom, acknowledging that the nation has at times struggled to fully realize those values. The candidate concluded his statement by remembering the thousands of innocent lives lost in what he termed a terrible act of terrorism.

Despite the commemorative focus of the post, political opponents and commentators immediately turned the conversation toward El-Sayed’s ongoing personal and political relationship with progressive live-streamer Hasan Piker. Piker has previously generated widespread controversy for viral comments in which he claimed that the United States "deserved 9/11." Critics argued that El-Sayed’s tribute lacked authenticity given his continued alignment with the online commentator.

The controversy brought renewed attention to prior campaign appearances involving the two figures. Earlier in the election cycle, on April 7, 2026, Piker joined El-Sayed at a Democratic primary campaign rally at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Photographs from the event showed the two men speaking together in a green room before addressing student supporters on campus.

Opposition figures quickly mobilized online to condemn the Senate hopeful. The conservative digital media account Libs of TikTok rebuked El-Sayed directly, calling him a fraud in response to his anniversary remarks and urging him to remain silent.

Steve Guest, a political commentator and former communications aide to Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, also criticized the Democratic candidate by sharing a photograph of El-Sayed standing alongside Piker. Guest accompanied the post with a direct challenge asking if the image represented the candidate's true stance, while also highlighting an inflammatory quote from Piker declaring his disdain for the country.

Republican political consultant Ryan Girdusky delivered a scathing rebuke of El-Sayed’s post, arguing that campaigning alongside an individual who justified the 9/11 terror attacks revealed profound dishonesty. Girdusky characterized the candidate's public tribute as hypocritical in light of his political associations.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee also intervened to challenge El-Sayed’s record and public messaging. NRSC communications director Joanna Rodriguez posted a statement condemning the candidate for failing to disavow controversial allies who made anti-American statements. Rodriguez further alleged that El-Sayed had spent years minimizing the tragedy of 9/11 and showing sympathy for terrorists rather than honoring American victims.

Other Republican strategists focused their criticism on the delivery and tone of the candidate's commemorative statement. GOP digital strategist Mike Hahn mocked the post by suggesting El-Sayed was merely reciting pre-approved talking points from a script rather than offering sincere personal reflections on the tragedy.

The controversy also drew reactions from conservative commentators questioning El-Sayed’s viability in the statewide contest. Joey Mannarino, co-founder of the right-wing media group Overton Institute, expressed shock at the momentum El-Sayed had built in Michigan. Mannarino argued that campaigning with individuals who justified 9/11 placed the candidate far outside the mainstream, calling into question his suitability to represent the state in the U.S. Senate.

El-Sayed has previously sought to manage the political fallout stemming from Piker’s incendiary remarks. Following an incident in which Piker publicly referred to Israel as a "Jewish ISIS," El-Sayed clarified that no one outside of himself and his official campaign spokesperson speaks on behalf of his Senate bid.

At that time, El-Sayed accused political opponents and media pundits of using an online Twitch streamer to distract voters from critical economic and social issues. The candidate asserted that his campaign remained focused on key voter priorities, emphasizing that Michigan residents were primarily concerned with the cost of groceries, gasoline prices, healthcare access, and the quality of local public schools.

Media observers also noted a distinct change in how El-Sayed framed the 9/11 anniversary compared to his previous statements. Chuck Ross, an investigative reporter with The Washington Free Beacon, pointed out that El-Sayed’s latest message concentrated entirely on the terror attacks themselves. Ross highlighted that this differed from the candidate's past anniversary posts, which routinely focused on criticizing the subsequent War on Terror and its policy aftermath.

The intense scrutiny surrounding El-Sayed’s social media post illustrates the significant political vulnerabilities progressive candidates face regarding digital associations and activist ties. As the Michigan Senate campaign advances, Republican opponents appear determined to keep El-Sayed’s controversial connections at the forefront of the electoral debate.
