NATO Jets Scramble in Poland Amid Wave of Russian Jet-Powered Drone Strikes Across Ukraine

NATO allied military aircraft were mobilized over Poland during the overnight hours in response to an intense wave of Russian drone strikes that targeted several regions in western Ukraine. The deployment highlighted heightened security concerns along the military alliance's eastern flank as aerial assaults edge closer to member state borders.

The Armed Forces Operational Command in Warsaw confirmed the precautionary maneuvers via official statements, noting that military leaders ordered a temporary rise in the readiness status of selected air and ground assets. Polish officials emphasized that the deployment was preventive in nature, specifically designed to secure and defend the nation's sovereign airspace in territories directly bordering the Ukrainian strike zones.

According to military authorities in Warsaw, ground-based air defense units and radar reconnaissance networks were placed on elevated alert alongside airborne patrol aircraft. The operational command maintained surveillance against prospective risks to Polish territory until the immediate threat subsided, concluding the heightened security mission after approximately two hours of active monitoring.

The defensive measures were triggered by an extensive overnight bombardment documented by the Ukrainian Air Force, which reported that Russian forces launched a total of 149 unmanned aerial vehicles across the country. The incoming barrage incorporated advanced strike platforms, including Shahed attack drones—roughly half of which were powered by jet engines—alongside Gerbera and Parody decoy craft designed to overwhelm radar networks.

Ukrainian air defense systems successfully intercepted and neutralized 128 of the incoming drones during the widespread engagement. Despite the high interception rate, local authorities confirmed that unintercepted drones or falling debris resulted in direct impacts and damage across 13 distinct locations throughout Ukraine.

Tragedy struck the northeastern city of Sumy, where local officials reported that a drone strike struck a shopping center. The devastating hit on the commercial facility claimed the lives of at least two people and left an additional 23 individuals wounded, triggering an immediate response from emergency rescue teams.

Civilian infrastructure in the capital of Kyiv was also subjected to nighttime attacks. Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that at least three people sustained injuries when a drone struck a fuel station located in the city's Holosiivskyi district, sparking emergency intervention to control the resulting damage.

Elsewhere in the capital, Ukraine's State Emergency Service documented damage to a residential building caused by the overnight assault. In the Dnipropetrovsk region, rescue agencies reported that Russian strikes injured at least eight people as emergency crews worked through the morning to extinguish blazes and assist affected residents.

The Russian Ministry of Defense issued statements claiming responsibility for targeting key southern and southwestern maritime nodes, identifying the port cities of Mykolaiv and Chornomorsk as primary objectives. Russian military officials also asserted that their strikes targeted two commercial dry cargo vessels that were navigating toward the major Black Sea shipping port of Odesa.

Simultaneously, Moscow claimed to have repelled an exceptionally large reciprocal drone assault launched by Kyiv. Russian defense officials stated that their own anti-aircraft forces intercepted at least 448 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles overnight, engaging targets across 13 Russian regions as well as over occupied Crimea, the Black Sea, and the Caspian Sea.

The extensive cross-border aerial activity caused widespread disruption to civil aviation across the Russian Federation. Rosaviatsiya, the federal air transport agency, implemented emergency flight restrictions and ground stops at multiple regional hubs, including airports in Sochi, Tambov, Penza, Saratov, Volgograd, Krasnodar, Grozny, Vladikavkaz, and Makhachkala.

The civil aviation agency also suspended routine flight schedules in the capital region, temporarily halting air traffic operations at Moscow's Vnukovo and Domodedovo international airports while air defense systems operated in nearby sectors.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the extensive counter-drone operations in a public morning briefing, confirming that Ukrainian forces had executed targeted strikes against eight strategic infrastructure sites that actively support the Russian war effort over the preceding 24 hours.

Zelenskyy highlighted strikes on significant industrial and logistics facilities located deep inside Russian territory, including an oil refinery situated in the remote Yamalo-Nenets autonomous region and a key maritime commercial port in Dagestan. Additional infrastructure targets were struck in Moscow, Voronezh, Astrakhan, and Bryansk.

The Ukrainian president maintained that these retaliatory operations serve as a necessary countermeasure against continued aerial bombardment, stating that Ukraine will consistently deliver a proportional response to ongoing Russian aggression and terror against its population and critical infrastructure.
