### New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's Administration Files Lawsuit to Block Teacher Pay Raises

New York City, NY - A lawsuit filed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration has sparked a legal battle with the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), the city's largest teachers union, over the proposed pay raises for education paraprofessionals. The move has come as a surprise to many, given the union's previous endorsement of the mayor.

The recent dispute centers on the "RESPECT Check Act," which was passed by the New York City Council with a unanimous vote in July. The bill would have provided a $10,000 bonus to education paraprofessionals, a move intended to address the significant underpayment faced by many in the field.

However, Mamdani has reversed his stance on the legislation, arguing that it violates the state's Taylor Law, which protects public employees' rights to negotiate compensation. As a result, his administration filed a lawsuit on August 19th to block the bill's implementation.

The UFT has responded swiftly, filing a motion to intervene in the lawsuit last week. UFT President Michael Mulgrew made it clear that the union was prepared for such a challenge. "We knew this lawsuit was a possibility, and we were prepared," he stated.

Mulgrew emphasized that the RESPECT Check Act was designed with care to ensure it did not violate the Taylor Law, and that the City Council would not have passed the bill if it were deemed illegal. "This moment is an opportunity for Mayor Mamdani to create a new, fairer system and build the kind of city he said he wanted to lead," Mulgrew said.

The lawsuit has caused a rift between the mayor's office and the union that was once supportive of his leadership. The UFT had endorsed Mamdani in July 2025, after he secured the Democratic nomination for mayor. Despite this, Mamdani's recent actions have led to criticism and skepticism from the union.

In a news conference last week, Mamdani defended the discussions between his administration, the City Council, and the UFT, claiming that they have been "productive." While he acknowledged his support for a pay raise for paraprofessionals, he has not explicitly stated that he would support the bill as it currently stands.

The city council has shown solidarity with the UFT in the face of the lawsuit. In a joint statement, City Council Speaker Julie Menin and council member Carmen De La Rosa pointed out that the bill was a crucial step towards addressing the underpayment of paraprofessionals and the staffing shortages contributing to the city's budgetary challenges.

The conflict over the pay raises for education paraprofessionals in New York City is far from over. With both sides entrenched in their positions, the lawsuit filed by Mayor Mamdani's administration could have significant implications for the future of public education in the city.
