Phil and Penny Knight Pledge $1.1 Billion to Establish Oregon's First Women's Hospital

Phil and Penny Knight have announced a transformative $1.1 billion philanthropic commitment to Providence St. Vincent Medical Center and the Providence Heart Institute. The historic contribution is designated to fund the development and construction of the first hospital in Oregon dedicated specifically to women's healthcare, marking a major expansion for the state's medical infrastructure.

Beyond establishing the new specialized hospital, the massive donation will significantly bolster cardiovascular treatment across the health system. It is also slated to fund advanced clinical research, support comprehensive training initiatives for the heart institute's medical staff, and facilitate the seamless integration of patient services throughout the broader medical center.

The latest gift continues a deep, multi-year relationship between the hospital system and the billionaire Nike co-founder and his wife. The couple has supported the Providence Heart Institute for more than a decade, having previously contributed over $200 million, a total that includes a $75 million gift announced earlier this year.

Hospital leadership stressed the critical need for a dedicated facility tailored to the evolving clinical requirements of women. Ray Moreno, the chief executive officer of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, noted that female medical needs shift substantially across different stages of life, yet patients are frequently forced to navigate isolated healthcare disciplines and fragmented care environments on their own.

Moreno emphasized that the Knights' multibillion-dollar investment provides a singular opportunity to unite these disparate medical specialties in one cohesive environment. By consolidating these services, the health system intends to broaden medical access for women across Oregon and establish a comprehensive framework to eliminate longstanding gaps in care.

The major donation arrives at a challenging juncture for women's healthcare providers across the United States. Hospitals nationwide are observing a noticeable increase in pregnant patients who are simultaneously dealing with complex chronic illnesses, including hypertension, diabetes, substance use disorders, and various mental and behavioral health conditions.

At the same time, healthcare organizations across the country are facing significant financial constraints caused by reductions in government funding. As public financial support declines, medical institutions are finding it necessary to rely more heavily on private philanthropic avenues to sustain operations and build specialized facilities.

Dan Oseran, executive medical director of the Providence Heart Institute, highlighted the growing necessity of private funding in the modern medical landscape. He noted that because resources remain scarce, healthcare providers must increasingly look toward charitable donors to bridge gaps, adding that a gift of this scale eliminates friction and enables the institution to pursue vital initiatives that would otherwise be impossible.

Philanthropic scholars point out that medical centers and health research organizations are exceptionally well-positioned to handle capital infusions of this size. Benjamin Soskis, a historian specializing in philanthropy and nonprofit institutions, observed that medicine and scientific research have stood as the premier targets for mega-philanthropy since the emergence of modern charitable giving in the late nineteenth century.

Soskis also noted that amid growing criticism regarding wealthy individuals parking or warehousing fortunes in private funds, the Knights have embraced and updated an established philanthropic approach. By deploying massive amounts of capital immediately into tangible healthcare assets, their strategy offers an active model for moving substantial wealth directly into community infrastructure.

The Knights' tradition of making high-impact contributions is rooted in strong, long-term partnerships with nonprofit leaders whom they have come to know and trust. Oseran explained that their funding choices represent highly personal decisions driven by confidence in the institutions they support, built over time as organizations consistently achieve their goals and demonstrate capable stewardship.

With this latest commitment included alongside their previous direct gifts and pledges, Phil and Penny Knight have contributed more than $9 billion to philanthropic causes over the last twenty years. Approximately $2.5 billion of that overall sum has been directed to their family foundation and donor-advised funds, earning them a spot on the Philanthropy 50 list of major donors twelve times since 2006.

The couple, whose fortune is estimated by Forbes at approximately $25 billion, has directed substantial philanthropic resources across Oregon. They have previously donated over $2.7 billion to Oregon Health & Science University, an amount that includes an initial $100 million gift in 2008 to establish the Knight Cancer Institute and a subsequent $2 billion contribution to the cancer center last year.

Furthermore, the Knights have contributed more than $2 billion to Phil Knight's alma mater, the University of Oregon, providing separate $500 million gifts in 2016 and 2021 to establish and expand the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact. Their broader giving has also encompassed college sports, environmental initiatives, youth recreation programs, and a $400 million donation in 2023 to the 1803 Fund to support the revitalization of Portland's historic Albina community.
