In an exclusive interview with Fox News, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico declared his support for a nationwide ban on gender-transition surgeries for minors and voiced opposition to transgender-identifying males participating in women's sports. The Texas lawmaker simultaneously walked back several of his previous controversial remarks regarding gender identity and theology as his closely watched campaign enters its crucial final stretch.
The political recalibration arrives as the Texas Senate contest between Talarico and Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton remains tightly contested, according to recent Fox News polling. The race has drawn intense national scrutiny because it represents a pivotal battleground that could ultimately determine which political party secures a majority in the United States Senate.
The outcome in Texas carries substantial ramifications for federal governance, as a potential Democratic victory in the traditionally conservative state would significantly hinder President Donald Trump's capacity to enact his legislative agenda. Both candidates face unique headwinds, with Paxton navigating his own set of controversies while competing in an unusually competitive statewide environment.
Talarico outlined his updated positions during a campaign stop at a Dallas food drive on Tuesday. Notably, the Democratic candidate's outreach event occurred concurrently with the inaugural GOP midterm convention taking place just a few miles away in downtown Dallas, highlighting the intense political activity currently converging on North Texas.
When directly questioned during the interview about whether he would cast a vote in favor of a federal ban on gender surgeries for minors if elected to the Senate, Talarico responded with a definitive "Absolutely." The candidate maintained that his fundamental principles on the issue have remained steady, despite scrutiny regarding his past voting record in the Texas Legislature.
Addressing his previous opposition to state-level restrictions, Talarico explained that a prior Texas measure aimed at curbing medical gender transitions for youth went too far in its scope. He stated that his primary objection to the state legislation stemmed from what he characterized as overly broad statutory language, rather than an objection to regulating surgical interventions for young people.
Talarico detailed his legislative philosophy by emphasizing that lawmakers are tasked with evaluating the entirety of a bill's broader provisions. He noted that when legislation contains elements he deems harmful, he feels compelled to vote against the comprehensive package while utilizing legislative amendments to narrow the policy focus to intended goals, such as restricting surgical procedures on minors.
During his tenure in the Texas House of Representatives in 2023, Talarico voted against Senate Bill 14, a statutory measure designed to prohibit gender surgeries, puberty blockers, and specific hormone therapies for minors. Records show that Democratic lawmakers introduced 18 separate amendments attempting to alter the legislation, all of which Talarico supported, though none secured enough votes to pass.
Turning to athletic participation, Talarico acknowledged that the debate surrounding biological males competing in women's sports categories remains a significant and sensitive issue across Texas. The Senate candidate articulated that he opposes transgender athletes competing in girls' sports divisions whenever such inclusion compromises competitive fairness or physical safety.
Drawing upon his personal professional background prior to entering politics, Talarico emphasized that his perspective is rooted in his experiences working directly with young people. He noted that as a former public school educator, he maintains deep concern for student athletes and believes that maintaining safety and competitive balance in youth sports must remain paramount.
This position represents a noticeable evolution from Talarico’s earlier stances while serving as a state representative. In 2021, as a member of the Texas House Public Education Committee, he strongly opposed Senate Bill 29—which mandated that public school athletes compete according to the biological sex designated on their birth certificates—dismissing the legislation at the time as a "manufactured problem," and later voted against House Bill 25.
Beyond sports and medical procedures, Talarico addressed previous polarizing statements, admitting that he "missed the mark" with his earlier commentary. The candidate specifically retreated from prior public assertions claiming the existence of six distinct genders, as well as his past philosophical declaration that "God is nonbinary."
In addition to addressing social and cultural topics, Talarico offered sharp critiques of the United States Supreme Court during the interview. He emphasized that moving forward into the final phase of his campaign, his central message to Texas voters will concentrate heavily on economic affordability and the everyday financial pressures facing working families.
With the general election scheduled for November 3, Talarico has been actively campaigning across the state, including a recent appearance before supporters at the Cailloux Theater in Kerrville on August 31. As both campaigns head toward Election Day, Talarico's efforts to clarify his policy positions highlight the pressure to appeal to a broad electorate in what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive Texas Senate races in modern history.
