Michigan's Arab American Community Shifts Away from Trump and the GOP

The Arab American community in Michigan, once a significant voting bloc for Donald Trump, is experiencing a notable shift in political allegiance. Four years after Trump's victory in the state, many Arab Americans are disillusioned with the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and the slow peace process in Gaza, leading to a growing dissatisfaction with the Republican Party.

In 2024, Trump's promise to prioritize American interests resonated with many Arab Americans, particularly in the Detroit area, who swung their support his way over issues such as the war in Gaza and cost-of-living concerns. However, as the war in Iran intensifies and the peace process in Gaza stalls, these same voters are expressing their frustration with the current state of affairs.

Albert Abbas, who presented Trump with a peace prize during his 2024 visit to Dearborn, Michigan, summed up the sentiment among many Arab Americans: "Did he do that? Did he put American interests first? It's the complete opposite."

Michigan Republicans, who had hoped to build sustainable support among the state's Arab American population, are now facing a challenging reality. Hassan Nehme, who served as the Michigan Republican Party's vice chair during the 2024 cycle, admitted, "We lost all traction. Republicans are kind of dead in the water in the area right now."

The shift in sentiment is not just a reflection of policy disagreements but also of perceived broken promises by Trump. Imam Husham Al-Husainy, who backed Trump in 2024 and was initially scheduled to offer a benediction at the inauguration, now supports Abdul El-Sayed, a Democrat whose parents are Egyptian immigrants. Al-Husainy cited Trump's recantation on his promise for "no new wars" as a key factor in his change of heart.

Former Democratic mayor of Muslim-majority Hamtramck, Amer Ghalib, echoed this sentiment, saying, "There is a tremendous work that needs to be done … to address people's concerns and regain their trust."

The midterms are expected to mark a significant change in sentiment within the Arab American community toward the Republican Party. Faye Nemer, who leads the Dearborn-based Middle Eastern and North African American Chamber of Commerce, predicted, "Many voters, including myself, are now asking whether the policy promises we received bear any resemblance to the reality that we're seeing on the ground."

In the upcoming Senate race, former Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers is fighting to hold onto the gains Trump made in 2024 against Abdul El-Sayed, a Muslim whose parents are Egyptian immigrants. Rogers has not shied away from branding El-Sayed as a Muslim extremist, hammering him for campaigning with Hasan Piker, a controversial left-wing influencer, and for his response to an attack on a Michigan synagogue earlier this year.

El-Sayed has condemned antisemitism throughout his campaign and apologized for his remarks after the synagogue attack. Despite these efforts, Rogers' allies have circulated reports from conservative outlets that seek to link El-Sayed's father-in-law to the Muslim Brotherhood.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee's first ad of the general election called El-Sayed by his full name, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, further fueling the controversy. Trump himself weighed in, calling the election a battle against "jihadists being elected all over the place."

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the Arab American community in Michigan is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of the state's politics. The shift away from Trump and the GOP could have significant implications for the battle for Senate control and the broader political dynamics in the region.
