US Navy Carrier's Arrival in Pattaya Raises Economic Hopes Amidst Sex-Tourism Concerns

The arrival of the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln in Thailand's resort city of Pattaya has sparked a mix of optimism and apprehension among locals. The carrier, along with two accompanying vessels, is scheduled to dock at Laem Chabang this week, providing a brief respite for nearly 5,000 sailors and Marines after a record-breaking 200 days at sea.

The Abraham Lincoln's long deployment, which began in November and was later redirected to the Middle East to support military operations in the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, has raised concerns about the mental health and morale of the crew. Reports of suicide attempts and declining morale aboard the ship have added an extra layer of concern for Pattaya, a city that has long been associated with sex tourism.

Despite the risks, Pattaya Mayor Poramase Ngampiches expressed hope that the visit would provide a much-needed economic boost to the city. "Each U.S. military personnel could spend 1,000 to 3,000 baht per day ($30 to $91), depending on how long they stayed ashore and whether they stayed overnight," he said.

However, the potential economic benefits come with a significant risk. Pattaya is known for its sex industry, which has been openly visible in major tourism hubs across the country. Local authorities have been preparing for the influx of sailors and Marines, with additional patrols and raids to crack down on prostitution.

Pattaya police chief Anek Srathongyoo acknowledged the challenges. "We are doing our best, but it is difficult," he said, explaining that sex workers could potentially solicit in public areas without the knowledge of the authorities.

The Abraham Lincoln left its home port of San Diego in November and was later redirected to the Middle East to support military operations in the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. The prolonged deployment has raised concerns about the mental health and morale of the crew, with reports of suicide attempts and declining morale aboard the ship.

In Pattaya, a fishing village partly transformed into a tourism center on the back of U.S. servicemen seeking succor during the Vietnam War, some are hoping for a financial boost. "It should help stimulate Pattaya's economy in the short term," Poramase said.

However, the risk of sexual exploitation is also a major concern. Pipatpong Fakfare, an associate professor at Bangkok University's School of Humanities and Tourism Management, warned that the influx of a large number of customers could increase the likelihood of sexual exploitation and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

The overall commercial impact on Pattaya, which has over 300,000 rooms, would depend partly on where personnel chose to spend their time, as some could travel to the capital Bangkok, said Thanet Supornsahasrungsi, president of the Association of Chonburi Tourism Federation.

"The risk to health and safety, as the influx of a large number of customers may increase the likelihood of sexual exploitation and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases," said Fakfare.

The Abraham Lincoln's visit to Pattaya is a reminder of the complex relationship between tourism and the sex industry. While the economic benefits of tourism can be significant, the risks of sexual exploitation and the spread of diseases cannot be ignored.

The Abraham Lincoln's arrival in Pattaya is a complex situation, offering both economic opportunities and significant risks. As the city prepares for the visit, it must balance the potential economic benefits with the potential dangers of increased sex tourism.
