Tributes Paid to Welsh Engineering Executive Owain Davies Following Fatal Light Aircraft Crash in Swiss Alps

Tributes have been paid to Owain Davies, a well-known Welsh businessman and dedicated community figure, who has died alongside two other individuals in a light aircraft accident in the Swiss Alps. The 55-year-old executive from west Wales was the managing director of Amcanu, an engineering and manufacturing company based in Burry Port, Carmarthenshire.

The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday when a Cirrus SR22T aircraft crashed high in the mountainous landscape near the alpine resort town of Leukerbad, located in the southern Swiss canton of Valais. Emergency services were alerted after witnesses in the area observed smoke and fire rising from the mountainside where the plane went down.

According to regional aviation and police authorities, the aircraft had taken off from Sion airport, situated in the Rhône Valley. For reasons that have not yet been established by investigators, the plane encountered catastrophic difficulty and crashed into a steep mountain slope approximately ten minutes into its journey.

In response to the crash, a substantial multi-agency emergency rescue operation was immediately deployed to the remote alpine site. First responders included specialised mountain rescue personnel from the Valais Rescue Organisation, local police officers, and municipal firefighters, supported by three emergency helicopters tasked with reaching the difficult terrain.

The crash resulted in three fatalities. Alongside Davies, another British citizen was killed in the accident, though their identity has not yet been formally confirmed. Swiss authorities have noted that formal identification procedures remain ongoing for the other two victims who lost their lives in the tragedy.

Following the announcement of his death, Davies’s son, Aron Davies, spoke of the profound grief experienced by the family. He described the incident as an unimaginable loss, remembering his father as a driven and determined individual who consistently faced challenges with optimism and never accepted that any obstacle was too significant to overcome.

Aron also reflected on his father’s distinctive character and significant professional and personal influence. He noted that his father had acted as a vital mentor throughout his entire life, both within family matters and in the commercial sphere, adding that numerous colleagues at Amcanu would likewise feel the sudden loss of an inspiring mentor and guide.

Amcanu released an official statement expressing profound sadness over the passing of its managing director. The Burry Port company paid tribute to Davies as a spirited, strong-willed, determined, and deeply caring leader whose work ethic was matched by his enduring commitment to the people around him.

The engineering firm also underlined that Davies's family remained the central focus of his life. In its tribute, Amcanu highlighted his deep devotion to his wife, Michelle, his immense pride in his two children, Aron and Ffion, and the immense joy and affection he held for his young grandchildren, Oakley and Albie.

Amcanu possesses longstanding roots in Carmarthenshire, having originally been founded in Burry Port in 1975 by Davies’s father, Spencer Davies OBE. Owain Davies subsequently took over the leadership of the family-run enterprise in 2000, guiding the engineering business through more than two decades of development and growth.

Beyond his industrial leadership, Davies was widely recognised as a proud Welshman and a fluent Welsh speaker who maintained an active commitment to public service and charitable causes throughout the country. Since 2017, he had served as a trustee for the Wales Air Ambulance Charity, contributing his governance and business expertise to support the life-saving organisation.

Dr Kyle Jacques, chair of trustees for the Wales Air Ambulance Charity, offered warm words of remembrance, emphasising that Davies had made a significant and lasting contribution to the organisation and its emergency services. Dr Jacques praised Davies as a valued colleague and friend whose personal loyalty and generous spirit had meant a great deal to the entire team.

Davies’s record of voluntary community service also included extensive involvement in coastal maritime safety. Prior to his work with the air ambulance, he had served for nearly 25 years as an active helmsman with the Burry Port Lifeboat crew, assisting in numerous search and rescue efforts along the Welsh coastline.

An official inquiry into the causes of the alpine aviation disaster has been initiated by the Swiss Transportation Safety Board. Parallel judicial and investigative procedures have also been opened by the Valais cantonal police in conjunction with the Office of the Attorney General to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the flight.

Meanwhile, the UK Government confirmed that diplomatic and consular resources have been mobilised to support those affected. A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated that officials are in direct contact with Swiss authorities and are providing dedicated assistance to the families of the two British nationals who died in the incident.
