Trump Taps Kimberly Greenwood for Caribbean Diplomatic Post Alongside Slate of Envoys

President Donald Trump has officially sent a new slate of diplomatic nominations to the U.S. Senate for confirmation, selecting Kimberly Greenwood, the wife of country music artist Lee Greenwood, to serve as the top American representative to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.

The Caribbean posting carries an expansive regional portfolio. If approved by lawmakers, Greenwood will concurrently represent American interests across multiple island nations without extra financial compensation, handling official ambassadorial duties for Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Following the announcement on Monday, Greenwood expressed her gratitude publicly through social media. Sharing an image featuring herself, her husband, and Trump, she thanked the president for showing confidence in her abilities and granting her what she described as an extraordinary opportunity to serve the United States abroad.

The diplomatic selection underscores the longstanding personal and financial relationship between Trump and the Greenwood family. Lee Greenwood’s signature patriotic track, "God Bless the USA," has served as Trump’s standard walk-on anthem at political rallies for years, and the two men previously partnered commercially to market a $59.99 "God Bless the USA Bible."

Lee Greenwood also took to Instagram to celebrate his wife's appointment, highlighting her extensive administrative and organizational background with the president. He noted that she spent 18 years working alongside Trump during his tenure owning the Miss Universe Organization, during which she directed state-level pageants.

The selection of loyal associates and high-profile backers for ambassadorial posts is a well-established tradition in American politics. Successive administrations from both major political parties have frequently distributed sought-after diplomatic assignments in desirable regions to prominent campaign donors, trusted allies, and personal supporters rather than career foreign service officers.

Trump’s move follows the precedent set by his predecessor in the very same post. Democratic President Joe Biden previously chose Roger Nyhus, an influential Seattle business executive and major Democratic donor, to lead the U.S. embassy handling relations with Barbados and neighboring Eastern Caribbean states.

While such political appointees rarely direct major shifts in American foreign policy, these appointments can occasionally draw intense scrutiny or present administrative challenges for the White House if controversies arise during their tenure abroad.

Beyond the Caribbean assignment, the White House announced several other key diplomatic nominations on Monday, most notably choosing outgoing U.S. Representative Wesley Hunt, a Texas Republican, to become the chief U.S. envoy to Saudi Arabia.

Hunt, currently nearing the conclusion of his second term in the U.S. House representing the Houston region, became available for the posting after an unsuccessful statewide run. He finished third in the March 2026 Texas Republican primary for the U.S. Senate, trailing state Attorney General Ken Paxton and incumbent Senator John Cornyn.

If confirmed by the Senate, Hunt will step into a sensitive and demanding post in Riyadh amid heightened volatility throughout the Middle East. The region remains engulfed in conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, while direct hostilities between Saudi forces and Iranian-backed Houthi fighters based in Yemen continue to escalate.

Hunt brings prior military experience in the region to the diplomatic mission, having served as an officer in the U.S. Army and acting as a diplomatic liaison within Saudi Arabia. Posting on the social platform X, Hunt acknowledged the vital strategic alliance between Washington and Riyadh and emphasized the profound responsibility associated with leading the mission.

The administration also submitted nominations to fill vacant ambassador positions in several other nations, sending candidates to the Senate to represent the United States in Haiti, Somalia, Djibouti, and Suriname.

Political appointments during Trump's previous administration occasionally produced significant diplomatic and political friction. Gordon Sondland, a hotel executive and $1 million inaugural donor named ambassador to the European Union, ultimately delivered damaging testimony during Trump's first impeachment proceedings regarding Ukraine policy before being dismissed from his post.

Other first-term political appointees drew international headlines for unconventional conduct. Jeffrey Ross Gunter, a donor appointed ambassador to Iceland, alarmed officials in low-crime Reykjavik by seeking armed personal bodyguards, while Robert "Woody" Johnson, the former envoy to the United Kingdom, faced scrutiny over allegations of inappropriate remarks and claims he attempted to steer the British Open golf tournament to a Trump-owned Scottish property.
