U.S. Treasury Department Bars Reporters from G20 Finance Meeting in Asheville

The U.S. Treasury Department has sparked controversy by blocking journalists from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Bloomberg News from covering the Group of 20 (G20) finance ministers' meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. This decision has been met with criticism from media outlets and press freedom advocates, who argue that it represents an attempt to restrict independent journalism and evade public scrutiny.

According to reports, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has not provided a clear explanation for the denial of credentials. When questioned by The Associated Press, Bessent stated that the decision had "nothing to do with point of view." However, the selective nature of the exclusion, with some reporters being allowed access while others were not, has fueled speculation about the reasons behind the move.

The New York Times reported that Alan Rappeport, a reporter who has been covering such meetings and the Treasury Department since 2017, was among those denied access. Meanwhile, Jim Tankersley, the Times' Berlin bureau chief, was permitted to attend. This discrepancy has raised concerns about the criteria used to determine who is granted access to such high-profile events.

The Times issued a statement strongly condemning the exclusion of American journalists from an event held in the United States. "Denying American journalists access to an event in the U.S. is not just another disturbing effort by the administration to undermine independent journalism, but a blatant attempt to evade public scrutiny," the statement read. The Times also highlighted the significance of the G20 meeting, noting that it addressed critical issues such as the war in Iran, sanctions, bond markets, and inflation, which are of great importance to the global economy and the American public.

Bloomberg News reported that "numerous" journalists from the news agency, including some based in Europe and Asia, had their accreditation requests rejected. The news agency expressed its disappointment, stating that the denial of access "undermines media freedom and public accountability."

The Wall Street Journal declined to comment on the matter. The G20 meeting, hosted by Treasury Secretary Bessent, is scheduled to run from Saturday through Tuesday and will include finance ministers, central bank governors, and senior officials from the world's top economies. This year's G20 summit, which involves heads of state, is set to take place in December at Trump's golf club in Doral, Florida.

The incident marks the latest in a series of tensions between the U.S. media and the Trump administration. For example, the Defense Department declared its press office a classified space earlier this year, after demanding that reporters agree to government-imposed restrictions on their work. This led to most news outlets leaving the building last fall.

The Associated Press has also sued Trump over access to the White House press pool, after its access was curtailed for sticking with the name "Gulf of Mexico" after the administration ordered it to be renamed the "Gulf of America."

As the Trump administration continues to face scrutiny over its policies and actions, the restriction of media access to events such as the G20 finance ministers' meeting raises questions about the transparency and accountability of the government. The situation underscores the importance of a free and independent press in a democratic society and highlights the ongoing struggle to protect press freedoms in the face of political pressure.
