Wisconsin Swing District Race Tests the Power of Loyalty to Donald Trump

As the battle for control of the United States House of Representatives intensifies, Republican U.S. Representative Derrick Van Orden is staking his political survival in western Wisconsin on an unapologetic alignment with President Donald Trump. While some vulnerable lawmakers might consider distancing themselves from the top of the ticket during difficult midterm environments, Van Orden is taking the exact opposite approach.

Van Orden, a two-term incumbent representing Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District, has made it clear that he views any hesitation among fellow Republicans to embrace Trump as both a tactical mistake and a profound failure of character. In his view, backing away from the party’s central figure during an election year demonstrates an unacceptable lack of steadfastness.

The decision to lean into Trump’s brand of combative politics comes with significant political stakes. Republicans across the country are grappling with headwinds that include the president’s sagging poll numbers, broad dissatisfaction surrounding an unpopular war with Iran, and persistent economic anxieties that could weigh heavily on down-ballot candidates.

Despite these potential liabilities, Van Orden is betting that turning out the conservative faithful remains his most dependable path to victory. A former Navy SEAL who shares Trump’s aggressive and confrontational political style, the congressman believes that activating loyal base voters is critical as long as Trump maintains his position as the undisputed leader of the Republican Party.

Van Orden emphasized his belief in political steadfastness just before traveling to Dallas to appear at Trump’s midterm convention. He argued that loyalty has become distressingly absent from the modern political arena and asserted that the political system would function far better if leaders demonstrated greater commitment to both their allies and their fellow citizens.

Standing in his way is Democratic candidate Rebecca Cooke, who is mounting an aggressive challenge in a high-stakes rematch. Cooke, a political activist who grew up on a family dairy farm and works part time as a restaurant server, is seeking to flip the seat after narrowly falling short in their previous contest two years ago.

The earlier race was decided by less than three percentage points, cementing the district’s status as one of the most competitive and closely monitored congressional battlegrounds in the nation. With the total number of genuinely contested House districts continuing to shrink nationwide, the outcome in western Wisconsin could ultimately determine which party holds the House majority.

Geographically, Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District forms a distinct V-shape that traces the state’s western border along the Mississippi River and Minnesota before extending south to the Illinois state line. The region features a rich political heritage that has traditionally rewarded pragmatic, middle-of-the-road candidates rather than ideological partisans.

For decades, voters across the district favored moderate leadership. Democrat Ron Kind represented the seat for 26 years before choosing to retire in 2022, and prior to Kind’s tenure, a moderate Republican held the congressional seat for 16 years.

The territory’s electoral history demonstrates its capacity to swing between parties depending on the national mood. Former President Barack Obama carried the district in both of his successful White House bids, showing its historical willingness to back Democrats with broad appeal across rural and small-town communities.

However, the political landscape shifted as Trump found considerable resonance in the district, carrying it across three consecutive presidential elections. Trump’s enduring appeal in the area helped him secure narrow statewide victories in Wisconsin in 2016 and 2024, even as he fell short in the state during the 2020 election.

The district’s unique track record has earned it a reputation as a crucial barometer for statewide and national trends. Republican U.S. Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, who has navigated his own series of close statewide races over the years, has characterized the 3rd District as a bellwether within a broader bellwether state.

The competing strategies of the two campaigns were on full display during a recent Labor Day parade in Readstown, a tiny village of fewer than 500 residents nestled in the scenic hills of the Driftless Area. Both candidates used the local gathering to connect directly with constituents and project their contrasting visions for the district.

Van Orden participated in the parade by riding his motorcycle alongside his grandsons, Teddy and Henry, reinforcing his approachable, populist image among local supporters before heading off to the national party convention in Texas.

Cooke, accompanied by a contingent of enthusiastic supporters marching through the village, focused her message on voter exhaustion with the current political climate. She argued that residents throughout the district are weary of conventional partisan gridlock and are eager for fresh perspectives and alternative leadership.

That sentiment resonated with local residents like Nancy Deckert, a 75-year-old retired postal worker living in Readstown. Deckert, who represents the type of voter Cooke hopes to win over in November, noted that many community members feel overwhelmed by ongoing political turmoil and are increasingly convinced that a meaningful change of direction is necessary.
